In what can only be described as an unbelievable omission, the Greek government is set to vote on a bill that is only “anti-racist” in name, as it will absolve those who deny or praise the genocide Hellenism has suffered.
Even more outrageous, the bill gives Jews their own special category, but nothing of such is afforded to Greeks. How is it possible that conservatives and leftists in the Greek parliament who want this bill seek to punish denying the genocide of Jews or Tutsis, yet provide no such clause for the denial of Greek, Assyrian, or Armenian genocides .
Aside from the issues and barriers this draconian bill presents to free expression and objective historical research, this bill is not even handed, and ironically, racist itself, because it seems to focus mainly on issues of Nazis and Jews. So why not be honest and call it the “denial of the Jewish suffering in WWII” bill?
In the end, if this law is imposed, anyone in Greece who raises doubts about the Holocaust of Jews, or the genocide of Tutsis by Hutus, will be punished by law. Meanwhile, Kemalists and Neo-Ottomans in Athens and Thessaloniki will be free to ridicule the children of survivors of the genocide of the Greeks of Pontus and Asia Minor, as well as Armenians and Assyrians. These genocides are not only omitted from the new “anti-racist bill”, but the Greek government itself refuses to recognize them!
In May, Golden Dawn attempted to amend the last incarnation of the anti-racism bill, suggesting that if a law criminalizing the denial of the genocides perpetuated against Hellenism. Both SYRIZA and the ruling coalition refuse to accept or even include this recommendation in the anti-racism bill. They feel that such a law would compromise many powerful individuals and take attention away from the holocaust!
This law is immoral, treacherous and completely unfair. It is hard to believe any MP who took an oath of service of the Greek people would vote for it, but what really matters is what the foreign powers instruct them to do.
